SSSEWWT Healthcare

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has established world class medical institutions in India, as well as premier educational institutions and huge water supply projects. He thereby transformed His mother, Easwaramma’s simple wishes for her community to have health care, education and drinking water into massive social service projects.

One small piece of Bhagawan’s health care programs is the Mother and Child Project. This was initiated by Swami for the health and social welfare of women in the area surrounding His ashram. This project was inaugurated on July 19th, 2005 under the auspices of the Easwaramma Women’s Welfare Trust. It is being taken as a model and it’s methods are adopted by the respective sri sathya sai state trust all around the country.

The Mother and Child Project provides continuing prenatal and postnatal care to women, and infant care, in the villages of the Sri Sathya Sai Mandal. The project was started with just two villages, Karnatnagepalli and Enumalapalli. Four years later, by August, 2009 the project had grown to serve all 45 villages and thandas of the Sri Sathya Sai Mandal.

A voluntary team of doctors, nurses and paramedical now visit these villages from the 19th to 26th of every month. To date, 364 camps have been held. A total of 15,566 mothers and 31,186 children have been seen in these camps (see charts and tables).

Accurate statistical records are maintained for mothers and children, so that their health conditions can be monitored systematically on a continuous long term basis. These records have provided invaluable follow-up tools for successive teams of doctors to ensure sustained treatment and care.

For prenatal cases, the results of all tests such as Haemoglobin, blood sugar, HIV, HBsAg, blood pressure, weight, height, etc. are recorded. The growth and development of the foetus and the well-being of the mother are all assessed.

Appropriate medication and advice is given. Folic acid, doxinate, calcium, iron, multivitamins and other relevant medicines are distributed in each camp, according to the mothers’ terms, signs, and symptoms of the pregnancy.

Through this program, mothers have also been educated about the importance of nutrition, breastfeeding and both personal and environmental hygiene, as well as hospital delivery. Stress is placed on these aspects, and the women are gradually being sensitized to their necessity. Most of the cases are forwarded systematically for the deliveries (normal or caesarean)to the SRI SATHYA SAI GENERAL HOSPITAL, Prasanthi Nilayam.

Up to 5 years, the children are treated for any illness and condition, and in serious cases are referred to the SRI SATHYA SAI SUPER SPECIALITY HOSPITAL, Prasanthi Nilayam and Whitefield, Bangalore.

With Bhagawan’s guidance and Grace the program seeks to grow from strength to strength, bringing increasing numbers of women and children under Swami’s protective care.
